Welcome to the Ranaan Meyer Home Page

Ranaan Meyer
Ranaan Meyer is a musical force that is quickly being recognized throughout the music world for his many projects, including his compositions and double bass work with the electrifying string trio, Time for Three. In addition to being a talented composer and double bass player, Meyer is also actively involved in education programs across the country, and is frequently called upon to join orchestras across the country as a soloist. As a composer and performer, Meyer has a rare versatility, and in addition to his classical work, he is an accomplished jazz musician, who has performed with the likes of Branford Marsalis, Jane Monheit, Mark O'Connor, and many more. Mr. Meyer began studying music at the age of 4, soon graduating from piano to cello and then double bass. In 2003, Meyer graduated from the acclaimed Curtis Institute of Music. During his time at the Curtis Institute, Mr. Meyer began working with Zach DePue and Nick Kendall forming the string trio Time for Three. Their music, which proved to be a wildly popular mix of classical, country western, pop, gypsy and jazz, soon launched their careers as successful musicians, and they continue to collaborate, tour and record together releasing albums on the record label eOne.
Soon after graduating, Meyer began to play in multiple orchestras, including the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Meyer's enthusiasm and talent for composing and performing has placed him increasingly in demand as a collaborative musician and soloist, and he has been commissioned to write several pieces by organizations such as The American Composers Forum, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and others. He also composes for his own musical projects, creating refreshingly unique works.
Teaching is a passion of Meyer's; he has held adjunct Double Bass Professorships at both Princeton University and the University of Delaware, spent several Summer's teaching alongside Hal Robinson (Principal Bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra) at the Strings International Music Festival in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and has also lead their Double Bass program. He taught at the Intermountain Suzuki Camp in Sandy, Utah and Mark O'Connor's String Camp in San Diego, California. Additionally, Meyer has given master-classes and private lessons at major universities across the country.
Ranaan Meyer's enthusiasm for teaching led him to create camps of his own, with the goal of providing professional instruction for other musicians. In June of 2008, he launched Wabass Institute for the Modern Day Bass Player, held in Wabash, Indiana. Now in year four, the tuition-free summer institute is led by Ranaan Meyer and two other exciting bass players, Harold Robinson (Philadelphia Orchestra) and Eric Larson (Houston Symphony). Inspired by the success of Wabass, Meyer conceived Wabass JV which functions as a preparatory camp for the more advanced instruction received at Wabass. Wabass JV will be held at the Curtis Institute of Music, Summer 2011.

The Ranaan Meyer Band:
Ranaan has recently started a new group that consists of piano, guitar, and bass. This group allows Meyer to focus on classical repertoire as well as his compositional fusion of ALL musical styles. This new group is perfect for educational outreach and hopes to be utilized for this purpose wherever they perform. In addition, the pianist in the group happens to be Ranaan's mother, Norma Meyer, the guitarist is Tim Wendel, and the percussionist is Matt Scarano.
Meyer began his musical studies at the piano at age 4; at age 11, he took up the double bass (once he was big enough to hold it). He attended the Manhattan School of Music and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2003. In the past, Ranaan would appear regularly with orchestras such as the Minnesota Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and The Philadelphia Orchestra, but Mr. Meyer has found himself increasingly in demand as a chamber musician and soloist, as well as a composer creating unique new works for his trio Time for Three, the Ranaan Meyer Band, and for solo bass and other ensembles. Most recently Mr. Meyer has been arranging and composing new material for the Ranaan Meyer Band. The latest piece is Khachaturian's Tocatta which originally was composed for just piano but Meyer has arranged this for the Band (guitar, drums, piano, bass). It is awesome! This arrangement sounds like that of an entire orchestra playing with a rock band.
He has composed and performed 8 new pieces for solo double bass. 4 of the 8 pieces are for solo bass while the other 4 are composed for the Ranaan Meyer Band. In addition, Ranaan has composed 2 works for Hal Robinson, the Principle Bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr. Meyer completed a Commission entitled, "My Zayda" (for Violin, Piano and Double Bass) for the Kingston Chamber Music Festival's 18th Anniversary in Rhode Island.
Other commissions Ranaan has completed include a double bass and harp duet as well as a set of Time for Three pieces for Astral Artistic Services and a Time for Three composition for the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Symphony, "Of time and three rivers". All commissions have been expedited through the American Composer's forum. Mr. Meyer also collaborates with Nicolas Kendall, Zach De Pue, Steve Hackman, Norma Meyer, and Tim Wendel to co-compose/arrange music together.
Mr. Meyer, also an accomplished jazz musician, has performed with Branford Marsalis, Jane Monheight, Victor Lewis, Jason Moran, Mark O'Connor, Ari Hoenig, Duane Eubanks, Mickey Roker, Rodney Green and many more. Ranaan, at age 19 produced, directed and performed in the very first Washington Township Jazz Festival which was also broadcasted live on Philadelphia's WRTI. Mr. Meyer, an avid teacher, has held in the past adjunct Double Bass Professorships at both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. He has spent several Summers teaching alongside Hal Robinson (Principal Bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra) at the Strings International Music Festival in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and has also lead the Double Bass program. He has also taught at the Intermountain Suzuki Camp in Sandy, Utah and Mark O'Connor's String Camp in San Diego, California.
Through all of Mr. Meyer's teaching experience he found himself compelled to begin camps of his own. He launched Wabass in Wabash, Indiana: A Double Bass Camp of his own in June 2008. Wabass teachers include Hal Robinson (Principle Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra/bass teacher at the Curtis Institute of Music) and Eric Larson (Houston Symphony Double Bassist). The camp is free of tuition to the 9 elite double bass students that are accepted every year.
